c.1845 French Engraved Gilt-Bronze Carriage Clock.
Inv. #: |

Maker: |
Paul Garnier, 2494 |
Dial: |
Dial: The white porcelain dial has gilt Roman numerals for the hours, gilt-bronze Tre-Foil hands and is signed 'Paul Garnier/Her Du Roi/Paris'. |
Movement: |
Movement: The two-train eight-day movement is stamped on the frontplate, 'HL', is wound, set and adjusted off the backplate either directly or through the back door, has rack and snail striking on a bell, is stamped and numbered 'Paul Garnier/Her du Roi/Paris/2494' and most importantly has Garnier's chaff cutter escapement. |
Notes: |
Both the case and movement are stamped 2494. Paul Garnier is commonly credited to have begun the carriage clock industry in France. His chaff cutter frictional-rest escapement provided a reliable alternative to some of the more common examples as it eliminated the contrate wheel, reduced lateral wear and was easily produced. He designed and made several series of case styles that are commonly referred to as Series I to IV. Although he adopted the rack form of striking early on, he still produced examples using countwheel striking throughout his career. c.1880 French Marble Cosmographique Clock, No. 10.
Inv. #: |
F207 |
Makers: |
Mouret - Clockmaker
Delemarche - Globe maker
Victor Laneuville - Retailer |
Case: |
The polished shaped Belgian marble pedestal case has simple volutes to the sides, engraved gilt decorations to the front panel and carries the complicated movement and globe above. |
Dial: |
The white porcelain chapter ring dial has black Roman numerals for the hours and steel Breguet-style hands. |
Movement: |
The eight-day time only clock movement has circular plates, carries several stamped trademarks, has a pin pallet escapement, a steel suspension, is adjusted for fast/slow at the pendulum and is supported by and drives a larger mechanism centered above the base.
The robust globe mechanism is mounted in the center above a silvered engraved plaque with the retailers name, 'Vve Laneuville a Paris' and is also supported by three large leveling screws with turned brass heads and knurled edges. There are two knobs that are used to set the globe mechanism to the time. One rotates the globe so it is properly aligned with the sun indicator and the other rotates the entire carriage so it is properly set for the date on the reverse painted glass ring. There is also a smaller third knob that frees the globe mechanism from the escapement by shifting a pivot and releasing a wheel from the pinion thus allowing the entire mechanism to slowly advance until it is reengaged. |
Globe: |
The large well-detailed eight inch globe shows warm and cold currents and other notable geographical elements, is inclined 23 degrees and 28 minutes, is framed by a gilt meridian ring supported by gilt-bronze brackets and is signed by the maker, 'Globe, Adopte, Par Le Conseil de L'Universite, Maison Delemarche, Rue Serpent 25, Paris'. |
Notes: |
The clock shows the difference between mean time, the time shown on the clock, and solar time, the time as indicated by the passing of the sun. A comparison of the two would give the equation of time. It also shows the relationship of the earth to the sun through the calendar year as read against the glass disc and provides a clear delineation between night and day.
Mouret, after 22 years of development, first patented the mechanism in 1865. In the late 1870's his invention was given notice in several scientific publications including 'La Revue Chronometrique' of 1877 which included an illustration.
Stamped throughout the piece is the number '10'.
Victor Laneuville was listed at Rue Ste-Croix-la-Bretonniere, 1860-1870.
Maison Delamarche was established in Paris in the 18th century by Charles Francois Delamarche (1740-1817). The firm continued to make globes into the 20th century. |

|
Notes:
|
During this period it became popular by some of the leading firms including Linke, Zwiener and Vion to make replicas of some of the great pieces of the Louis XIV and XV periods. The replicas execution, right down to signing the pieces with the original makers signatures, were so close to the original pieces that they are often mistaken to be period. They were, however, not intended to fool. Not only were contemporary techniques used in the production, but often they also carried the makers marks as in this case where the backs of the bronzes have 'HV 630'.
Oval dials are extremely rare. They were first introduced in this model by Andre-Charles Boulle and Gilles-Marie Oppenord and require the hour hands to compensate for the shape of the dial.
Henry Vian (1860-1905) was a celebrated bronzier who specialized in the production of bronzes in the eighteenth century style, particularly light fittings. He participated in the Great Exhibitions of 1878, 1889 and 1900 and received a Gold Medal in 1889. His workshop was based at 5 rue de Thorigny in Paris.
His wife and son ran the business after his death in 1905 until 1944, when the city of Paris took over the premises for the l'Ecole des Métiers d'Art.
The four continents: Europe, Asia, America and Africa, were the ones acknowledged during the early 18th century. Each of the figures is clothed and carrying weapons associated with those parts of the world.
There are only a handful of both period and Victorian examples of this model documented and a couple of these have had the oval dial replaced with a round one.
-
J Paul Getty Museum: Considered an original example until proven not to be period. The photo of the clock is on the cover of 'Clocks, French Eighteenth Century Clocks in the J. Paul Getty Museum', 1976. - Oval Dial.
- Wallace Collection, London - Replaced dial.
- Bibliotheque l'Arsenal, Paris. - Original dial.
- Detroit Institute of Arts - Original dial.
- Waddddesdon Manor - replaced dial.
-
In a contemporary photo of one of Vion's showrooms against the back wall. Assumed oval.
